Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a diverse group of third grade students in San Marcos, California. Our school is in a predominantly low income neighborhood with a high percentage of English language learners. The whole school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch. Despite the hardships that many of our students face, they come to school eager to learn and determined to succeed.

My Project

It’s amazing to see students taking chances and making mistakes. When they jump in and solve problems they are also building their critical thinking skills. A key component in this is leveraging erasable and reusable surfaces so that students aren’t afraid to make mistakes and have to start over on a new surface. That’s where these large erasable whiteboards will come into play. When they solve rich tasks in groups or plan their design thinking engineering plans, they will be able to work collaboratively, make mistakes, erase, and save their work while embracing a productive struggle.
