Percy Street in Newcastle forms part of the B1307 road, which is one of the major traffic routes though the city centre. Percy Street runs south-west from the Haymarket / Barras Bridge to Newgate Street, at the junction with Gallowgate and Blackett Street. Percy Street has seen great change as the city centre has developed. The late 19th/ early 20th century buildings of the east side of the street were demolished to make way for the Eldon Square shopping centre and the Haymarket Bus Station. Some older buildings remain on the west side of the street, particularly the Bruce Building (1900), and the Crows Nest (1902). The west side of the street has pedestrian access to the Newcastle University campus and the University's INTO Building (2012). The Handyside Arcade (1906) was demolished to make way for the development of Eldon Gardens. Other bygone buildings include the Palace Theatre (1895) and Haymarket Cinema (1933). A large brewery once existed on Percy street in the mid 19th century.
