He earned an Associate of Arts degree in mass communication from West Virginia State College. He began his broadcast career at WOAY-TV in Oak Hill, West Virginia, where he anchored the late-evening news. He also worked as a sports reporter at WCHS-TV in Charleston before landing his first job with the local ABC affiliate in Columbus.
He formerly held positions as a news director at WOAY-TV in Oak Hill, West Virginia, as the operations manager and announcer for WBES-FM in Charleston, West Virginia, and at NewsChannel 8 in Washington, DC. as an evening anchor.
In 1993, he got his first first-place reporting award from the National Association of Black Journalists in Washington, D.C. He was also nominated for two local Emmys for reporting and got two second-place prizes for reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists.
