My Project
My students are a fantastic group of 5th graders. They are creative, caring, and hardworking. In fifth grade, students focus on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers (fractions and decimals). Plus, working on understanding measurement concepts such as volume and graph points in the coordinate plane to solve real-world and abstract mathematical problems. In 5th grade a student's goal is to become proficient in their math computations and develop a greater sophistication when communicating their understanding of math concepts.
The goals of the project would be to give students hands-on manipulatives to be better able to ---
• comprehend mathematical operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
• recognize relationships among mathematical operations
• engage in problem-solving
• represent mathematical ideas in a variety of ways
• connect different concepts in mathematics
• communicate mathematical ideas effectively
Math manipulatives are very important. Math operations are actions and students need plenty of experience playing with and doing these actions before we expect them to understand them in abstract ways. That's where manipulatives come into play. Also, manipulatives expose students to a variety of visual tools, especially with fractions. Manipulatives can help students identify the relationship between how many times the part fits into the whole, it stretches a student's ability to think flexibly about a concept, etc.
Math manipulatives help students build confidences by giving them hands-on way to test and confirm their ideas, communicate their understanding and reasoning.
