Is Death Stranding a Walking Simulator?

Death Stranding is set for release Friday, and the world will get to experience the design of revered game director Hideo Kojima. After Death Stranding was revealed during E3 2016 with a stunning but confusing trailer, fans of Kojima's earlier works could not wait to see what kind of game Death Stranding would be.

As more reviewers and publications have gotten access to the game and begun to showcase its gameplay online, the game has been described by critics as a "Walking Simulator," a demeaning title given to games whose core gameplay is to have players move around an environment with little compelling or interesting mechanics.

While gameplay footage of Death Stranding has depicted interesting elements akin to other survival games alongside some intense action sequences, most of the gameplay does seem to be simply getting from one place to another. With Death Stranding possibly being the biggest game release of 2019, many gamers and critics are skeptical about just how good the game will be as more and more of gameplay is shown online before its official release.

As Kojima has explained in various interviews, the game's story and mechanics is meant to make a deep message about how in modern society, many people tend to sever connections or make toxic ones rather than foster meaningful ones. Hopefully, the "Walking Simulator" aspects of the game do not detract from player's experience game of the game too much, but add to the message Kojima is trying to convey.
