BLAZE HITS SAILBOAT; $35,000 IN DAMAGE

An electrical short sparked a fire that caused more than $35,000 in damage to a 45-foot sailboat docked on a canal in Fort Lauderdale, a fire chief said.

Fort Lauderdale firefighters received a 911 call at 4:55 p.m. Friday and responded to 915 Mango Isle, said Division Fire Chief Stephen McInerny. Firefighters forced their way onto Auspicious, a white and blue-striped 1981 Harden sailboat, and found a heavy fire below deck. It took them 15 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

Andrew Varacco, 48, of Fort Lauderdale, is the owner of the boat, McInerny said.
